Anthropic Adds Web Search API for Claude Models

Anthropic has launched a new web search API for its Claude AI models, allowing developers to build applications that retrieve real-time information from the internet. The API works with Claude 3.7 Sonnet, 3.5 Sonnet, and 3.5 Haiku, and can be toggled per request or at the organizational level.

When enabled, Claude automatically determines whether a prompt requires current data. It then generates a search query, scans results, analyzes content, and returns a response with citations. The system can also refine searches in multiple steps and lets developers control which domains Claude can or cannot access.

The API is priced at $10 per 1,000 searches. It’s part of a broader effort by Anthropic to make Claude more extensible, following last week’s release of tools that let developers connect apps and enterprise accounts to Claude. The company is also bringing web search to Claude Code, its coding assistant, to fetch up-to-date API documentation and technical resources during programming tasks.

Tesla’s Megapacks to power xAI

Megapack batteries

Elon Musk’s AI startup xAI is using Tesla’s Megapack batteries to support its massive “Colossus” supercomputer project in Memphis, according to the Greater Memphis Chamber. The site, which just completed its first construction phase, has been connected to a 150-megawatt electric substation.

The Megapacks stabilize power delivery during outages or usage spikes, complementing the facility’s controversial natural gas turbines, some of which are now being phased out. From January 2024 to February 2025, xAI spent about $230 million on Megapacks, according to Tesla filings. The deal underscores growing synergy between Musk-led ventures: xAI, Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and The Boring Company. Beyond backing xAI’s infrastructure, Megapacks allow owners to store electricity when prices are low and resell it during peak demand, making them both a technical and financial asset.
