Deepseek’s newest model is suspected of using Gemini in training

Chinese AI lab DeepSeek is facing speculation that it used outputs from Google’s Gemini models to train its new R1-0528 reasoning model. While DeepSeek hasn’t disclosed its training data sources, developers point to similarities in language and internal "thought traces" between R1-0528 and Gemini 2.5 Pro. This isn't the first time DeepSeek has been accused of training on outputs from rival models. Past incidents include its V3 model identifying as ChatGPT, and reports of data exfiltration from OpenAI accounts linked to DeepSeek. Such training techniques, known as distillation, are common but prohibited by OpenAI’s terms. As AI-generated content floods the internet, filtering training data has become increasingly difficult, further blurring model origins. OpenAI and Google are ramping up security measures to curb misuse, such as ID verification and trace obfuscation. DeepSeek has not commented on the allegations.
Windsurf says Anthropic has restricted access to Claude

Windsurf, the fast-growing coding startup reportedly being acquired by OpenAI, says Anthropic has significantly limited its direct access to Claude 3.7 Sonnet and 3.5 Sonnet models with little notice. CEO Varun Mohan expressed disappointment, stating the company had offered to pay for full capacity. The sudden change has forced Windsurf to rely on third-party compute providers, which may lead to short-term availability issues for users. Windsurf also lacks direct access to Claude 4, unlike competitors such as Cursor, Devin, and GitHub Copilot. Instead, it must use a workaround or require users to connect their own Anthropic API keys — a more complex and costly solution. Anthropic says it’s prioritizing “sustainable partnerships” and that Claude remains available via API. The move comes as Anthropic expands its own coding tools, including Claude Code and its new developer conference, while Windsurf races to keep pace with rivals in the competitive AI coding market.
