The new OpenAI model, GPT 4.1, is now available on ChatGPT for Paid and enterprise users, with GPT 4.1 mini released for users on the free plan. It was previously only available through the developer interface. This model, which is built for developers, specializes in debugging and coding and is supposed to improve on the previous model, o4-model. This is not the flagship model for OpenAI, but rather the primary option for everyday coding.

Microsoft is laying off thousands of workers, and software engineers are taking the biggest hit, despite showing a streak of profitable quarters. New data shows that over 40% of the 2,000 roles cut in Washington state were in software engineering. That’s just a slice of the ~6,000 layoffs Microsoft is making company-wide. The company says AI now writes up to 30% of the code in some internal projects. Microsoft pours billions into AI and data centers, reducing human coders and adding AI infrastructure. The new trend for tech companies seems to be favoring talent over the number of developers.
Microsoft isn’t alone. Salesforce, Workday, and others are also trimming engineering teams while hiring for AI-related positions.
